OK TAECYEON (2PM) CONFIRMED TO STAR IN BOYLOVE MOVIE
Soul Mate, a film that spans three cities – Berlin, Seoul, and Tokyo – tells the story of a 10-year love affair between two young men. The story begins when Ryu Narutaki (Hayato Isomura) – who has left everything behind in Japan to travel and experience new things – is saved by a boxer named Johan Hwang (Ok Taec-yeon) in a foreign land.
The film is written and directed by Shunki Hashizume (Scroll, More Than Words).
The idea came from a conversation between the director and producer Dai Ota while they were having melons at a cafe. The two wondered: What does it feel like to meet someone who shares your soul, someone who brings warmth to your heart just by thinking about them? What would it be like to write a story that spans different cultures and circumstances, and then have them meet again by “fate”? Where people from different countries meet in another strange place and their lives intertwine? So they came up with the title Soul Mate – and also made the two male leads Korean and Japanese.
Actor Isomura (Extremely Inappropate!, (Ab)normal Desire, The Moon) shared his excitement about playing one of the lead roles. “The script moved me with its love story between sadness and pain, and the incredible 10-year storyline created by director Hashizume really immersed me in the character. Working with Ok Taec-yeon was inspiring, his charm attracted me more and more each day. Filming in Japan, Korea and Germany gave the project a truly global feel.”
Seeing this as a perfect opportunity to broaden his horizons and explore new characters, Taec-yeon of the Korean boy group 2PM (Vincenzo, La Grande Maison Paris) was immediately drawn to the project. “The character of Johan Hwang intrigued me, his pain and inner struggles stayed with me long after I read the script. To prepare, I lost weight and trained in boxing, and I continued to train hard during filming to portray Johan as best I could.”
As Hashizume reflected on the true meaning of love and making the film, he continued to be amazed by the bond that brought the production team together, sharing: “The time spent weaving this story with our lead actors, cast and crew was both challenging and rewarding. Everyone involved in this project is a soulmate.”
