Filming by the seaside one summer, I met him under unusual circumstances. I was portraying a body adrift at sea, and he mistook it for a real-life tragedy. His heroic rescue attempt was the spark that ignited my feelings. But maybe I was too intense too soon. When I asked, in a lighthearted way, if he’d attend my future funeral, the weight of the question seemed to be too much, and he disappeared from my life.
